A man has been convicted of murdering a 20-year-old in Clapton, east London. Raynolph Asante, 23, residing on Pembury Road in Hackney, was found guilty on Thursday of killing Jason Romeo following a trial at the Old Bailey.
Mr. Romeo was discovered with stab wounds outside a location on Bodney Road around 18:00 GMT on February 18. The Metropolitan Police reported that Asante attacked Mr. Romeo after a violent altercation earlier that evening, which arose from a dispute involving a girl.
Sentencing for Asante is scheduled for January 23. Authorities indicated that while CCTV footage was scarce, officers expanded their investigation to include vehicles present at the scene. Analyzing phone data ultimately led detectives to identify Asante as a person of interest.
Investigation and Arrest
Subsequent house searches yielded additional evidence, but the suspects evaded capture until a media appeal prompted Asante to surrender to the authorities. He was arrested three days following Mr. Romeo’s death and charged on February 23.
Four other men charged in connection with Mr. Romeo’s murder were acquitted. They include:
- Joshua Ogedengbe, 20, from Brownhill Road
- Travis Mitchell, 23, from Bodney Road, Hackney
- Rhamyah Bailey-Edwards, 22, from Williams Avenue, Walthamstow
- Renaldo Roberts, 26, from Hobbs Place Estate, Hackney
Reactions and Statements
Mr. Romeo’s family expressed their relief following the verdict, stating, „The last 10 months have been the most difficult of our lives but we are so relieved that today we have got justice for Jason. Jason will always be remembered, forever missed and, as I used to tell him every day, always be loved.“
Detective Superintendent Kelly Allen, who oversaw the investigation, remarked, „This was a senseless act of violence that cost a young man his life. Jason Romeo was just 20 years old, and his family and friends are now left to face the devastating impact of his loss. During a confrontation, Raynolph Asante chose to retaliate with deadly force, gathering others to confront Jason and ultimately stabbing him in the street. There is no justification for such brutality.“
