A woman has been taken into custody on suspicion of murder following the tragic death of an 18-day-old infant in central London.
The Metropolitan Police reported that the baby girl lost her life after falling from a residential building.
Authorities responded to an incident on Horseferry Road in Westminster on Saturday morning.
Emergency services transported the infant to a hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
According to the police, a 43-year-old woman was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder and is currently in police custody. This incident follows a worrying trend of similar cases.
“Our thoughts today are with the baby’s family,” stated Detective Chief Inspector Alison Foxwell.
“The death of an infant is always an extremely tragic occurrence, and officers are making urgent inquiries around the circumstances.”
Foxwell added, “At this stage, we believe the incident occurred within a domestic context, but we are appealing for anybody with information to come forward.”
A police cordon was established following the incident, with uniformed officers guarding the area on Saturday evening.
The cordon extended across most of Great Peter Street, which is adjacent to Horseferry Road.
Forensic investigators were seen working in the vicinity, and traffic was diverted around the area as passers-by were rerouted away from the taped-off section.
